Terra Cotta-finding the right one!

July 24, 2017

I've been on a mission to find the right terra cotta color-and believe me it is one of the most difficult colors to get right.  I've sampled numerous samples on the exterior walls of my house and they seem to either turn too pink or too orange.

I tried all the "terra cotta" named colors from seemingly all the different paint companies with names as obvious as terra cotta, baked terra cotta, tuscany, toasted pecan, buttered yam and firenze but still couldn't find the right one...

Finally I decided to customize the color by identifying what I disliked and liked about each of the colors I had chosen.  For the color that seemed too orange I cut back on the yellow and the white, for the color that seemed too salmon I added a bit more black until finally a breakthrough!

Without going too brown it seemed to hit the right amount of terra cotta that is bold yet blends in and in the afternoon sun has an amazing glow

My friend Kaari who owns a company called French General came by and said "You did it-you found the perfect terra cotta!  It's like a villa in the tuscan hillside!" I was so relieved-Thanks Kaari!
